Sondheim has supplied supplementary material for a revival of Bernstein's Candide. The original Lillian Hellman libretto suited Bernstein's operetta-scaled score and anyone familiar with the overture had to be disappointed with the skimpy sound of the chamber-like version of the revival, where some sixteen musicians were dispersed among the actors and therefore diluted in a theater-in-the-round setting. However the in-your-lap, one-ring circus, peanut throwing intimacy proved engaging to the public and critics, enjoying a long run, despite some grumbling from purists like me.

Assassins is about how society interprets the American Dream, marginalizes outsiders and rewrites and sanitizes its collective history. "Something Just Broke" is a major distraction and plays like an afterthought, shoe horned simply to appease. The song breaks the dramatic fluidity and obstructs the overall pacing and climactic arc which derails the very intent and momentum that makes this work so compelling... - Mark Bakalor
